In July of 1964 Mayone was in Provo in the middle of summer school at BYU. One day she came home to her apartment to find a small package waiting for her. It had been delivered by the mailman earlier that day. She opened the brown paper package and underneath was a neatly wrapped box with a ribbon tied around it. A silver label said "Paul's Jewelry". The white wrapping paper had a hand-written note inscribed all the way around the wrapper. The note on the outside was from Muli to Mayone asking her to marry him. Inside, was a ring that fit perfectly.
Although they had spoken of marriage, Mayone and Muli had not made any specific plans and were not certain how, or if, things would work out, so a ring in the mail came as a total surprise to Mayone. Needless to say, Mayone sat and cried and her roommate took pictures. Later that night the girls in her apartment held a candle ceremony where they passed a lit candle around the circle. When the candle came to Mayone she blew out the flame. This let all the other girls know she was the one who had received a proposal for marriage.

When asked
"What made you think to send a ring in the mail when you really hadn't made specific plans?"
