Two Different Worlds

When Mayone returned to Utah she was committed to finish her final year of school so she jumped right in to Summer School at BYU. She and Muli wrote letters and after receiving a surprise ring and proposal from him in the mail her heart was even more determined to return to Hawaii.

Mayone planed to finish school at BYU but with new ideas growing, she decided she needed to make some changes. Instead, she moved home to do her student teaching in the elementary school in her hometown and transferred her credits to Weber State College where she would complete her remaining credits.
While living at home, Mayone had many discussions with her parents about the great divide they thought there would be between her and Daniel. They were concerned about the 'cultural differences' and discouraged her from marrying her island sweetheart. Mayone and Dan continued to write to each other. Daniel encouraged Mayone to pray about it and to think it out in her mind and heart and to make the best decision she could.

Mayone spends a cold Winter in North Ogden student teaching and writing to Muli in Hawaii.

Mayone believed that in spite of many perceived (and real) differences, that she and Dan could bridge any gaps with the love and commitment they shared and that although they came from two different worlds they could create a single world together through a strong marriage. Dreaming of being together again, Mayone remained convicted. They both felt sure and urgent about being married. During the fall of 1964 and winter of 1965 Mayone finished all the requirements for her degree and teaching certificate, and even skipped spring graduation in order to return to Hawaii as soon as possible. In the spring of 1965 Mayone returned to Hawaii with a teaching job offer to explore in Ka'a'awa School and a sweetheart to plan with.
